Why We Host Chinese-Market Websites on VPS Only
Shared hosting packs many customers onto one server. It is cheap, but performance depends on everyone else's traffic, settings are locked, and troubleshooting is limited. For sites targeting China, where visitors already cross international gateways to reach the server, extra slowness on the server side is costly.
We therefore host websites only on VPS plans. Each VPS is a KVM virtual machine in Hong Kong with NVMe storage and dedicated CPU and RAM. You get root access and can tune the web server, PHP, database and caching exactly as your site requires. The smallest plan at US$22.95 per month is enough for several small sites, and you can move up the plan table as traffic grows. The full list is on the China VPS hosting page.
Hong Kong as the Home for a China-Facing Website
All of our servers are in Hong Kong, and for websites aimed at Chinese users that is usually the right place. Hong Kong borders Shenzhen and has fast connectivity to mainland China, Hong Kong itself and the Asia-Pacific region. Visitors in Guangdong and other southern provinces normally get the quickest response, while the rest of the country is still far closer than to servers in Europe or North America.
Hong Kong-hosted sites also do not need a mainland ICP filing. For an overseas business that wants to sell to Chinese customers, publish product information in Simplified Chinese, or run a recruitment site for Chinese students, this removes a major barrier. You can launch in days rather than waiting for approvals and a local legal entity.
We think it is important to be honest that this is Hong Kong hosting, not mainland hosting. If a law or contract requires data to stay in the mainland, you would need a mainland provider instead.
Picking a Control Panel for Your Hong Kong Web Server
A control panel turns a VPS into a friendly web hosting environment with point-and-click domain, database, email and SSL management. Because you have root access, the choice is yours.
Free open-source panels
Several free panels handle websites, databases, DNS and email well and are popular with small businesses and developers. They keep costs down and run comfortably on smaller VPS plans.
Commercial panels
If your team already knows a commercial panel, you can install it with your own licence. These panels are common among agencies and resellers who need client accounts, quotas and branding.
No panel at all
Developers often prefer to manage Nginx or Apache, PHP-FPM and the database directly, sometimes with configuration managed in Git. This uses the fewest resources and gives full control.
Whichever route you choose, install updates regularly and protect the panel login with a strong password and two-factor authentication where available.
Making Pages Load Quickly Across Mainland Provinces
Server location is only part of the speed story. How the page is built often matters more for visitors in China. Focus on these points:
- Remove blocked or slow third-party resources. Some foreign font services, map embeds, video players, social widgets and analytics scripts load slowly or fail in mainland China, and a single blocking script can stall the whole page. Host fonts and scripts on your own server or choose services that work in China.
- Compress and resize images. Use modern formats and serve sizes that match the display.
- Enable caching. Full-page caching and object caching cut server response time dramatically.
- Turn on HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 and compression. These reduce round-trips and file sizes.
- Use a CDN for static files if your audience is spread across the country.
Test from several mainland cities on both mobile and fixed-line networks before and after each change so you can see what actually helps.
Setting Up Simplified and Traditional Chinese Sites
Many businesses serve two audiences from Hong Kong: mainland visitors who read Simplified Chinese and Hong Kong or Taiwan visitors who read Traditional Chinese. A single VPS can host both versions, either as separate domains or as language folders on one domain.
- Use UTF-8 throughout, and a full UTF-8 database character set such as utf8mb4, so every character stores correctly.
- Set the correct lang attribute and hreflang tags, such as zh-Hans and zh-Hant, so search engines show the right version.
- Choose fonts carefully; Chinese web fonts are large, so rely on system fonts or subset fonts to keep pages light.
- Keep URLs short and readable, using pinyin or English slugs where suitable.
Pair the site with a suitable domain, such as .cn for mainland branding or a .com for international reach. See our domain registration page for options.
SSL and HTTPS for Websites Served from Hong Kong
Every website should use HTTPS. It protects forms, logins and payments, prevents tampering in transit, and is required for modern browser features and faster protocols like HTTP/2. On a Hong Kong VPS you have two easy routes.
Most control panels can issue free automated certificates and renew them before they expire. This covers the majority of business sites. If you need an organisation-validated or extended certificate for a payment or corporate site, you can install a commercial certificate instead.
After installing a certificate, redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS, update internal links, and enable HTTP Strict Transport Security once you are confident everything works. Check that every image and script loads over HTTPS to avoid mixed-content warnings.
Running Email for Your Domain Alongside the Website
Most control panels include a mail server, so you can create mailboxes such as sales@ and support@ on your own domain. For reliable delivery, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, use a proper reverse DNS name for the server's IP, and avoid sending bulk marketing mail from the same IP that sends transactional messages.
Some businesses prefer to keep the website on the Hong Kong VPS and use an external email service. That is easy too: point your MX records to the email provider and keep web records pointing to the VPS. If your Chinese customers use local email providers, test that your messages arrive in their inboxes rather than spam folders before sending important campaigns.
Backup Planning for Business Websites on a VPS
With a VPS, backups are under your control, which means they need a plan. A good routine covers:
- Files and databases backed up at least daily for active sites.
- Off-server copies stored at a separate location, so a server problem does not take the backups with it.
- Retention of several days or weeks, so you can roll back to before a problem started.
- Regular test restores to confirm the backups actually work.
Most control panels include backup tools, and command-line tools like rsync or dedicated backup software work well too. Because traffic on our VPS plans is unlimited, copying backups to another server does not create extra bandwidth charges.
Hosting Multiple Client Sites for Chinese Campaigns
Agencies running campaigns for international brands entering China often host many sites on one larger VPS. Each client gets its own panel account, database and SSL certificate, and resource limits keep one busy site from affecting the rest.
A mid-range plan with plenty of RAM suits a group of brochure sites and landing pages, while an upper plan with up to 24 cores and 32 GB RAM can carry several e-commerce or CMS sites. Keep staging copies on the same server so clients can review changes before they go live, and set up monitoring so you know about problems before your clients do.
If a single client grows large, move that site to its own VPS or to a Hong Kong dedicated server. For WordPress-specific advice, see our WordPress hosting page.
Monitoring a China-Facing Website After Launch
Once your site is live, keep an eye on it. Simple uptime checks alert you within minutes if the web server stops responding, and resource graphs in your control panel show when CPU, RAM or disk space start running short. Review error logs weekly for failed logins, broken links and PHP warnings, and watch database size as your catalogue or blog grows.
For a China audience, add periodic speed checks from mainland locations as well as from Hong Kong. Performance across the border can change with carrier conditions and with updates to the third-party services your pages use. When you see a slowdown, compare it with recent changes to your site before assuming it is the network. Spotting a trend early gives you time to tune caching or move to a larger plan before visitors notice.
